Nansana LC1 Chairperson Dumps Garbage at Division Offices in Protest Over Poor Waste Collection

A local council leader in Nansana Municipality has taken the unusual step of delivering truckloads of garbage to government offices in protest against what she described as persistent failures by authorities to collect waste from her area.

Dorothy Nankya, the LC1 Chairperson of Nabweru South Cell, dumped the accumulated waste at the Nansana Division offices after residents raised concerns over garbage piles that had remained unattended along roads and in public spaces.

Nankya said the decision was intended to draw attention to the growing sanitation challenge affecting residents, arguing that repeated complaints to relevant authorities had not yielded action.

She accused waste management officials of neglecting their responsibility, saying the accumulation of garbage had become a health and environmental concern for the community.

“This garbage has been reported several times, but nothing has been done. We have decided to bring it to the offices where the responsible leaders sit so that they can see what residents are facing,” Nankya said.

Residents in several parts of Nansana Municipality have previously raised concerns over delayed garbage collection, warning that uncollected waste could increase the risk of disease outbreaks and worsen living conditions.

Local authorities are yet to issue an official response on the protest or explain the reasons behind the delays in waste collection.

The incident comes amid growing concerns across urban areas in Uganda over waste management challenges, as local governments struggle with increasing volumes of garbage generated by rapidly expanding populations.
