Dear Editor,
Two months ago, I called the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited
(UEDCL), toll-free line to report a dangerous electricity pole in our area that was sparking and appeared to pose a serious risk to people. The pole is located around the Lukuli-Nanganda junction, near Kilombe Road, a busy trading area.
However, despite making the report, I have not seen any meaningful action to address the danger. UEDCL should consider establishing dedicated inspection units across the country to regularly identify and address dangerous electricity infrastructure before accidents occur.
Such teams could work alongside communities to identify damaged poles, exposed wires, sparking equipment, and other potential hazards. Electricity infrastructure requires regular inspection and maintenance. Waiting for an
accident to happen before taking action, can have devastating consequences.
I therefore appeal to UEDCL to urgently inspect the reported site and establish a stronger nation-wide system for identifying and responding to electricity-related safety hazards.
