Russia, North Korea open first road bridge as ties deepen

Russia and North Korea have opened their first road bridge across the Tumen River, creating a new route for cargo and passengers as the two countries deepen ties amid the war in Ukraine.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin called the bridge a “new symbol of friendship”, saying it would boost trade and wider economic cooperation. North Korean Prime Minister Pak Thae Song described the opening as a “historical event.”

The bridge can handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,323 people a day, according to Russian state media. Cargo traffic will begin first, with passenger services expected later this year.

The project was agreed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 2024 visit to North Korea, which produced a strategic partnership treaty between Moscow and Pyongyang. Construction began in 2025.

The opening comes as North Korea faces scrutiny over its military support for Russia. Ukrainian investigative group Truth Hounds said the bridge could facilitate the movement of North Korean military personnel and workers into Russia, as well as the transfer of Russian technology and resources to North Korea.

Russia and North Korea already have rail and air links, but the new bridge provides their first permanent dedicated road connection.
