Makerere University has pledged to investigate formal complaints of sexual harassment and misconduct following concerns circulating on social media about a member of its academic staff.
Makerere University has responded to allegations of misconduct involving one of its academic staff members, reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and gender-based violence.
In a statement dated October 1, 2026, the university said it had taken note of concerns raised publicly through social media video posts and acknowledged the distress such allegations could cause within the university community.
The institution said it takes matters affecting the safety, dignity and welfare of students, staff and visitors seriously, adding that anyone who speaks out about experiences of harm deserves to be heard.
“Makerere maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward sexual harassment, gender-based violence, and any form of misconduct that threatens the well-being of members of the University community,” the statement said.
The university, however, emphasised that formal complaints must be handled through established institutional procedures to ensure thorough, fair and confidential investigations.
It said its response framework includes the Safeguarding Policy, the Policy and Regulations Against Sexual Harassment, as well as staff disciplinary procedures.
According to management, these mechanisms are intended to establish the facts surrounding complaints while safeguarding the principles of natural justice and due process for all parties involved.
University Opens Reporting Channels
Makerere encouraged students, staff and visitors with concerns to submit formal reports through its Gender Mainstreaming Directorate, the Office of the Dean of Students or MakSafeSpace, an online platform designed to facilitate anonymous and confidential reporting.
The university also pointed affected individuals to counselling and professional support services available through its Counselling and Guidance Centre.
The statement comes amid public concerns circulating on social media, although university management did not identify the staff member involved or provide details of the allegations.
Makerere said it would continue strengthening its systems for preventing misconduct, facilitating reporting and ensuring accountability.
The latest response places renewed attention on the university’s responsibility to provide a safe learning and working environment, as well as the importance of accessible reporting mechanisms and credible institutional investigations.
The statement was issued by Makerere University Management on October 1, 2026.
