Makerere University School of Public Health is exploring a partnership with Engeye Health Facility in Lwengo District to provide students with practical training in community-based healthcare.
A delegation from the school, led by Associate Professor John C. Ssempebwa, visited the facility alongside Associate Professor Tom Denis Ngabirano and Ms Koncepta Nalwanga to discuss opportunities for student placements and collaboration.
The proposed partnership would allow Makerere students to gain practical experience at the facility, learn about rural healthcare delivery and participate in community-based health programmes.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the delegation to assess Engeye’s infrastructure, services and capacity to support student training.
Engeye already hosts students and medical interns from the University at Albany (UAlbany) in the United States under an established academic partnership.
Separately, UAlbany’s College of Integrated Health Sciences, which collaborates with Makerere’s School of Public Health, is exploring cooperation with Makerere’s Department of Nursing in areas including faculty and student exchanges, research and academic training.
The discussions come as UAlbany establishes a new nursing programme, creating potential opportunities for nursing students from Uganda and the United States to undertake placements at Engeye and learn alongside local healthcare professionals.
If developed, the proposed arrangement would expand Engeye’s role as a training centre while strengthening academic links between Ugandan and American health institutions.
The discussions are still at the exploratory stage, with no formal partnership details announced.
