Prime suspect arrested over murder of Moses Matovu

Police have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu, hours after the veteran musician died following an alleged confrontation in Kibuli, Kampala.

The suspect has been identified as Nsamba Vincent, 41, who was arrested in Ochange Ward, Yesu Amala, Nansana Division, Wakiso District.

Police said Nsamba was arrested following investigations into the circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death.

His arrest comes after Kampala Metropolitan Police earlier said they had identified a male suspect believed to have fled the scene following the incident.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu, 77, went to the residence of his girlfriend at about 5:30am on Thursday, September 24.

Police said Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence when they were allegedly confronted by a man who was previously in a relationship with the same woman.

Preliminary information indicated that the incident may have followed a physical altercation, although police said the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Matovu’s death were still being established.

Matovu sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, where he later died.

Police had earlier arrested the woman who was with Matovu and said she was assisting detectives with the investigation.

With the arrest of Nsamba, investigators are expected to question him as they work to establish what happened before, during and after the confrontation.

Police said investigations into the murder remain ongoing.

Matovu was one of the founding member of Afrigo Band and one of Uganda’s veteran musicians, with a career spanning several decades.
