Anita Among Thanks Museveni for ‘Parental Grace’ After Release From House Arrest

Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has thanked President Yoweri Museveni for what she described as his “parental grace” after being released from house arrest and spared prosecution over allegations that had been under investigation.

In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, Among first thanked God for what she called the “gift of life and freedom” before expressing gratitude to Museveni for intervening in her case.

“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” Among said.

Her remarks came shortly after Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that Museveni had directed that Among be released from house arrest and would not be prosecuted.

Among had been under house arrest since May 2026 amid investigations into allegations involving corruption, accumulation of illicit wealth and abuse of office during her tenure as Speaker of Parliament.

The decision to halt prosecution marks a significant turn in a case that had attracted considerable public attention and scrutiny over the treatment of senior political officials accused of wrongdoing.

Among also praised Gen Muhoozi for what she described as his professionalism during the period of her detention.

She said she would now return her focus to representing her constituents in Bukedea and supporting the ruling political leadership.

“As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership,” she said.

Among’s statement followed appeals from political and community leaders in the Teso sub-region, who had called on Museveni to forgive her and allow her to seek specialised medical treatment.

The President’s decision has nevertheless reignited debate over accountability, the prosecution of public officials and the extent of presidential discretion in Uganda.

While Among has expressed gratitude for the decision, the move is likely to keep questions alive about how allegations involving senior public officials should be investigated and resolved, particularly where questions of public resources and abuse of office are concerned.

The development also places renewed attention on the balance between presidential clemency, political leadership and the principle that public officials should be held accountable for alleged misconduct.
