Uganda has begun weighbridge operations on the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway to enforce vehicle load limits and curb overloading, the Ministry of Works and Transport said on Tuesday.
The operations follow a directive by Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama aimed at strengthening compliance with prescribed vehicle weight and axle-load limits, the ministry said.
Vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes and above are required to undergo weighing in accordance with the law, it said.
The ministry said the exercise is intended to protect road infrastructure and improve road safety by reducing risks associated with overloaded vehicles.
Fleet operators, vehicle owners and drivers of heavy commercial vehicles have been advised to plan their journeys and comply with weighbridge signs and instructions from authorised personnel.
Vehicles found to be overloaded will face applicable charges and enforcement action, the ministry said.
The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway is a key transport link between Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and Entebbe International Airport, carrying passenger and commercial traffic.
The ministry urged motorists to ensure vehicles are loaded within prescribed limits and cooperate with weighbridge personnel to avoid disruptions.
Road users seeking assistance can contact the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway toll-free line on 0800 270 170 or WhatsApp on 0762 262 163.
