Uganda President Yoweri Museveni and India’s outgoing High Commissioner to Uganda, Upender Singh Rawat, discussed cooperation in digital transformation, science and technology during a meeting at State House Entebbe on Monday.
Museveni said the talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, including Uganda’s National Payment Switch and technology transfer.
The president also welcomed progress at the National Forensic Sciences University in Jinja, which was established through cooperation between Uganda and India.
“We discussed strengthening Uganda-India cooperation in science, technology and digital transformation, including the National Payment Switch and technology transfer,” Museveni said in a statement after the meeting.
The Jinja campus of the National Forensic Sciences University is part of India’s expanding cooperation with Uganda in forensic science, training and related technical fields.
Museveni did not provide further details on the timeline or implementation arrangements for the National Payment Switch during the meeting.
Uganda has been seeking to expand digital financial services and strengthen domestic payment infrastructure as the country pursues wider digital transformation.
The meeting also marked the end of Rawat’s tour of duty in Uganda. Museveni thanked the diplomat for his contribution to strengthening relations between the two countries and wished him well in his next assignment.
Uganda and India maintain longstanding ties covering trade, investment, education, health, defence, agriculture and technology, with Kampala increasingly seeking greater technology transfer and skills development as part of its economic transformation agenda.
