Police arrest woman as investigation into Moses Matovu death continues

Police have arrested a woman who was with Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu shortly before his death in an alleged confrontation at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division, Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu went to the residence of his girlfriend at about 5:30am on Thursday, September 24.

Police said the musician and the woman were leaving the residence when they were allegedly confronted by a man who is said to have previously been in a relationship with the same woman.

“The incident may have arisen from a physical altercation,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said in a statement.

However, police said the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Matovu’s subsequent death had not yet been established.

Matovu sustained serious injuries during the incident and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, where he later died.

Police said the woman who was in Matovu’s company has been arrested and remains in custody as detectives continue investigating.

The male suspect has also been positively identified but is believed to have fled the scene.

“Police are actively pursuing him to facilitate his arrest and assist in establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” Ms Kawala said.

Investigators are also verifying different accounts of what happened before and during the confrontation.

Police urged the public to remain calm and allow detectives to conduct their investigations without interference.

“We assure the public that all necessary steps are being taken to apprehend the suspect and establish the facts of the matter,” Ms Kawala said.

Matovu’s death has drawn widespread attention, with colleagues, friends and fans mourning the veteran musician, who was a founding member of Afrigo Band.

Police said they would provide further updates as more information becomes available.
