Police in Ntungamo District have recovered two motor vehicle batteries allegedly stolen from a vehicle in Cell 08, Ntungamo Ward, Ntungamo Town Council.
One suspect has been arrested and is in police custody, while two others identified as Wilber and Kasinge remain at large.
The arrested suspect has been identified as Akampwera Kenneth, a scrap materials dealer.
Police said the batteries were allegedly stolen during the night of August 20, 2026.
After receiving a report of the theft, police responded to the scene together with the Canine Unit. A sniffer dog, identified as Yuda, was deployed to track the suspects.
According to police, Yuda picked up the scent at the vehicle, where the suspects are believed to have stood while removing the batteries. The dog tracked the scent for about 200 metres along the road before turning into Kenneth’s workshop.
The workshop is reportedly used by Kenneth for dealing in scrap materials.
Police said the dog entered the workshop and lay down, indicating that the scent trail had ended there.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) subsequently searched the workshop and recovered two motor vehicle batteries.
The complainant positively identified the batteries as the ones allegedly stolen from the vehicle.
Kenneth was arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue. Police are also pursuing Wilber and Kasinge, who are still at large.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the theft and determine the involvement of all suspects.
