Uganda is seeking to attract Norwegian investment into renewable energy, with a focus on expanding solar power for industrial parks, rural agro-processing and clean cooking.
Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) Director General Robert Mukiza held talks in Oslo with Stein Gunnar Hansen, Head of International and Arctic Relations, and solar industry representatives from Renewables Norway as part of efforts to deepen investment ties between the two countries.
Mukiza highlighted opportunities for Norwegian renewable energy companies in utility-scale solar, rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems with storage, solar mini-grids and clean cooking solutions.
“Norway and Uganda share something: both built their economies on hydropower. We now want to add solar at scale,” Mukiza said.
Uganda seeks solar investment for industrial parks
The investment opportunities include solar projects serving industrial parks and rural agro-processing hubs, where reliable and affordable electricity is considered important for expanding production and adding value to agricultural output.
Mukiza also invited Renewables Norway to connect UIA with three to four member companies to explore potential investment opportunities in Uganda.
He further proposed that Renewables Norway consider organising an investment delegation to Kampala in 2027.
The engagement comes as Uganda seeks to diversify its energy mix and expand renewable energy investment, while Norway has developed significant expertise in renewable power, including hydropower and solar technologies.
