The Kingdom of Buganda has congratulated Rukirabasaija Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I on his ascension to the throne of Tooro, describing the relationship between the two kingdoms as a centuries-old brotherhood.
In a message issued on behalf of Buganda and himself, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga wished the new Omukama success as he assumes leadership of the kingdom following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
“On behalf of the Kingdom of Buganda, and on my own behalf, I extend our best wishes to Rukirabasaija Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma upon his ascendancy unto the throne of Tooro,” Mayiga said.
He said Buganda looks forward to seeing Tooro remain united and prosperous under its new monarch.
“We look forward to the unity and prosperity of the Kingdom of Tooro,” Mayiga added.
A historic royal bond
Mayiga said the relationship between Buganda and Tooro goes beyond the present transition, describing it as a longstanding fraternity that should continue benefiting both kingdoms and the wider Ugandan population.
“Buganda’s and Tooro’s centuries’ old brotherhood and fraternity shall flourish for the good of their peoples, and all Ugandans,” he said.
The ties between the two kingdoms have deep historical roots, with the royal institutions maintaining political, cultural and family connections over generations.
The relationship was also particularly visible during the reign of the late King Oyo, who ascended the Tooro throne in 1995 at the age of three.
Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II was among the senior cultural figures associated with the young monarch’s upbringing, strengthening the relationship between the two royal institutions.
New chapter for Tooro
Nyabongo’s ascension marks a new chapter for Tooro following the death of Oyo on August 27, 2026.
The Babiito royal clan selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as Oyo’s successor, with the process subsequently endorsed by the Rukurato, the kingdom’s supreme council.
His coronation at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal comes amid heightened public attention to the future of the kingdom and its traditional institution.
Mayiga’s message places Buganda firmly behind the continuation of the historic relationship between the two kingdoms, while emphasising unity, prosperity and cooperation as Tooro begins its new royal era.
For Buganda, the transition is therefore not only a change of monarch in a neighbouring kingdom, but also an opportunity to reaffirm a relationship that Mayiga says has endured for centuries.
